PORTRAIT-DANCE-FAMOUS FIGURE PAINTINGS

New England Massachusetts Connecticut Rhode Island New Hampshire Vermont Maine New York New Jersey Pennsylvania

Emily is not seen in white as she reputedly appeared in her later years, but is in the formal attire of a well dressed woman of the 1870's and '80's. How she really looked in the years of her great creative outpouring is conjecture. She stands here as a distant person in a distant place. Suspended around her are six of her poems. She now lives through these poems. They are clockwise from the upper left: A curious Cloud surprised the Sky; We do not play on Graves--; Abraham to kill him; Going to Heaven!; This is my letter to the World; Because I could not stop for death--

Ariadne, the daughter of King Minos of Crete had a half brother who was the Minotaur, a horrible monster, kept locked in the great labyrinth on the island. Young men and women were sacrificed to this half-man, half-bull monster. Theseus, Prince of Athens, volunteered to go to Crete and destroy the monster. Ariadne fell in love with him and gave him a magic sword and a ball of string so he could unwind it as he went through the great maze and find his way out. When Theseus had killed the monster and reached the door of the maze, he and Ariadne fled Crete for Athens. Ariadne was now a traitor to her parents, the king and queen, and was implicated in her half brother's death. Theseus and Ariadne stopped on the island of Naxos where he suddenly abandoned her. She remained marooned on the island until she was espied by Bacchus, who falling in love with her, proposed.

This is the first of 7 paintings created from the photographs in Lincoln Kirstein's book, Nijinsky Dancing. Len combined six photos of Nijinsky in the dance Carneval and in this case used some tentative color. The 7 paintings that were done of various Nijinsky dances and ballets was Len's return to figure painting that he had not done since the 1970's. Discovering Lincoln Kirstein's book reopened the door for him.

Danse Simoise is the second of 7 paintings created from Lincoln Kirstein's book, Nijinsky Dancing. The photo was black and white, the colors are the artist's.

After seeing Ken Burns' documentary and doing extensive reading about these two great founders of the Women's Movement, Len created many drawings and small portraits to try to express their character. These two paintings are the final result. They are not flattering; they're an attempt to show the whole person and the great courage and determination of these two ladies.

PORTRAIT-DANCE-FAMOUS FIGURES PAINTINGS

Len Gerwick has a great ability to paint figures. When he paints multiple figures he sees them as rhythmic forms related to each other in space, however their psychological or personal components are of great importance. His figure paintings can be portraits of famous individuals or generally contemporary people.

In the creation of these fine art figure paintings, Len usually uses a model. Each painting is preceded by a series of preparatory drawings.

The Nijinsky dance series was all done from old black and white photographs of the early twentieth century. The figure of the great dancer, each in a separate photograph, was combined in various dance paintings by the artist. The colors are the interpretation of the artist.

Len creates these figure paintings in his studio in Marlborough, Massachusetts. This art work is suitable for the educational, business and corporate environment as well as the private home.
