Man
Acrylic on linen

The figure represents the ordinary person caught in the juggernaut of propaganda and dwindling economic security. He inevitably shoulders the cost of war.

The Deluge

She represents the departure of freedom and liberty in a paranoid and self-righteous state that proselytizes democracy and freedom.

Venus, the Goddess of Love and Beauty, rests on a stone in mourning. Her son, Cupid, is behind, looking on in naive bewilderment. Venus loved Adonis. Despite her pleas, he went off hunting and was killed. With all her powers she could not stop him and here she realizes the moment of his death. In this painting, Adonis is the environment.

Creation is seen as immense power and strength bringing forth the most intricate and refined entities.

Mars leans against a wall that has inscribed the wars, persecutions and major battles of the 20th Century. Beyond the trampled flags is a blasted out land with weird mounds reminiscent of temple mounds where war captives were sacrificed to the gods

This is the same model who posed four different times. This painting displays a sense of rhythm of the four bodies, one next to the other; and also rhythm in the shape of the guitars, the furniture and the shadows on the wall.

These are four separate paintings hung side to side to make a repeating pattern as if one had four squares for a quilt. The four paintings show the same arrangement of shapes, but seen from different vantage points. The top left views the shapes straight on, the top right is looking from the side, the bottom right (behind the woman) is viewing from the opposite side of the upper left, and the bottom left (behind the man) is seeing from above.

Natural light on this assemblage creates shadows. The suspended black packing paper also creates a shadow. The life drawing of the man has a shadow that seems like another person behind him, or perhaps his spirit, or maybe his nemesis

MALE-FEMALE-NUDE PAINTINGS

Len Gerwick's painting of the nude figure is taken from the nude model. The large acrylic paintings are preceded by charcoal pencil studies of the model as well as further drawings where the composition of the painting is designed. The subject can have a political message or be taken from mythology.

The nude human body is sometimes incorporated into a 3D rhythm painting where a drawing or painting of the nude is combined with natural and man made objects. In this way the painting or drawing of the nude is akin to Len's abstract rhythm paintings. In a painting of multiple nudes, such as 4 Men with Guitars, the relationship of the human figures, along with inanimate objects, shadows and the space around is conceived as a rhythmic progression.
